Tallaght Driving Test Routes
Tallaght Driving Test centre is located on Broomhill Road off Airton Road and Greenhills Road in Tallaght. It is one of the busiest Driving Test Centres in the country with up to 10 tests taking place at any one time. The most recent pass rate figure released by the RSA was 46% which is in line with most other Dublin Driving Test Centres.
The Tallaght Driving Test Routes cover a mixture of residential areas such as Tymon North, Kilnamanagh and Belgard as well as through Cookstown Industrial Estate and past Tallaght Hospital. You may also be brought onto the Belgard Road which is a dual carriageway and speed limit of 60 KMPH or through Tallaght Village.
Tallaght Driving Test Centre Car Park
As you enter the Tallaght Test Centre (see photo above) you should stop or slow down to a crawl once you meet the hedge, observing both ways before turning to the left. Go slow in this area as it is very confined with lots of pedestrians walking to and from their cars. Before the test reverses into a car park space to make it easier once you start the driving test and where possible leave the first 5 spaces free for those coming back in from their test as they are the easiest to drive straight into. At the end of your test drive straight into space (you do not need to reverse). If the car isn’t parked correctly simply reverse back and correct it but make sure to do adequate observation

The Driving Tester can bring you anywhere in a 5km radius of the Driving Test Centre. In Tallaght the most common routes are towards Bakers Corner, Sallynoggin, the N11 and Watsons Estate.

The prominent features of the Tallaght Driving Test Route would be speed bumps, schools, hatch/road markings and roundabouts. Speed Bumps are classified as hazards and you need to check the mirrors and slow down before each one before building up speed again.
You may need to change to 2nd or 3rdgear depending on the size of the bump and ability of the car but never in 4th. Aim to slow down gently coming up to it, releasing the brake a few meters before hitting it and then begin to accelerate again once the impact has been made to maintain the speed.
If the speed bumps are far enough apart you can build up into a higher gear before dropping back down to 2nd or 3rd where necessary. Hitting speed bumps too fast is classified as a Grade 2 fault for Hazards and is one of the most common faults on the Tallaght Test Route.
There are a number of Schools in Tallaght and care should be taken when children are entering or leaving school. There are also quite a few lane changes and good use of the Mirror Signal (Position Speed Look) Technique should be used with good use of the side mirrors on approach and just before entering as well as a quick glance at the blind spot just before changing. Approaching Tallaght Village to turn right onto Greenhills Road can be particularly problematic. There is a lane to turn right and this often fills up with cars entering the Hatch markings. Do not enter these unless you want to risk a Grade 2 fault. You cannot be given a fault for obeying the Rules of the Road so enter the Right-Hand lane only when allowed to do so (after the Hatch markings at the Arrow). Where possible keep to the right to show your intention and to allow cars to pass on the left who intend to go straight or turn left to the N81.

To Pass your Driving test in Tallaght you need to complete 12 stages:
When is the best day or time to pass the driving test in Tallaght ?
- Apply for and pass your Theory Test
- Apply for your Learners permit with the NDLS
- Upon receipt of the Learners Permit book driving lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)
- Complete 12 EDT Driving Lessons as a minimum
- After agreement from your ADI apply for the driving test
- Get familiar with the Driving Test Route by using The Test Routes App
- Take Pretest Driving Lessons
- Learn all the Road Signs, Questions and Technical Checks
- Watch Youtube videos for the driving in general and Tallaght Test Centre in particular.
- After receiving an email from the RSA choose a suitable day/time for your test
- On the day, turn up at least 15 minutes early and await a phone call from the tester.
- Driving normally on the day and don’t drive differently just because its a driving test.
There are times of the day when the traffic around Tallaght is lighter. Generally speaking, Mondays and Fridays are busier than Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays and morning times are quieter than afternoons. The busiest time for driving tests in Tallaght is Friday afternoon so it is best to avoid choosing this time if possible. If you have an option of between 9:15-11:55am Tuesday to Thursday or the very rare Saturday morning slots then snap it up while you can.
After you receive the email from the RSA and go to choose a Test time it will only give options for 3 days. If neither the times or dates or suitable simply come back the next day and the options will have moved on a day. If you log on early in the morning you will have the best choice available. But don’t worry – If you are good enough to pass the day or time won’t make any difference!

The driving test is a minimum of 7.5km and 25minutes long. Normally the driving part of the test will take 30-35 minutes.
Can I change the date/time of my driving test in Tallaght ?
What is the format of the driving test in Tallaght ?
If your test is more than 10 days away you can change the time and date of the test for free. If it is under 10 days you will lose your fee if you need to cancel unless you have covid, in which case you can cancel and reschedule for free.
1: Enter the waiting room 15 minutes before your test starts.
2: Inside the Test Centre answer some questions including 12 Road Signs and 12 questions on the Rules of the Road.
3: Go to the car and do the under bonnet checks
4: Tester will check the insurance disc, tax, NCT, brake lights and indicators.
5: Inside the car do the Technical checks and hand signals.
6: Drive for 30-35 Minutes which includes a reverse around the corner, hill start and turnabout.
7: Return to the Test Centre and after being seated receive the result.
